Sleeping Problems

Many babies will have difficulty falling or staying asleep during their first year of life and maybe even beyond this. A baby begins to adapt to the normal night–day cycle during the first month of life and it is perfectly normal for babies not to have a full nights sleep before they reach 3 months of age.

Sleeping Problems & CMPA

Why does my baby have poor sleep?

There are many reasons behind sleeping problems in babies. In older babies, Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) and reflux can cause poor sleep. In newborns (0-3 months), the reasons can be reflux disease, or other chronic illnesses, or even feeding your baby too much at night time. In many babies, environmental factors, including excitement before bedtime and late napping in the afternoon, may also be responsible.

Could it be Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy?

Poor sleep is a common symptom in babies with CMPA. However, babies with CMPA usually experience more than just one symptom and these symptoms can be very different from one baby to the next. Therefore it is always best to discuss it with your baby’s healthcare provider. They will look at the symptoms in detail and often use a symptom scoring system to decide if it is related to CMPA.

What to Do Next?

If you are worried that your baby has symptoms related to cow's milk, you should seek advice from your healthcare provider. Whilst you are preparing to visit your healthcare provider, it can be a good idea to record your baby's symptoms over a few days before the visit.
